Life leads us all down different streams…

Life is like a stream flowing down from a mountain top. We may all start off from a hospital, where we are born. However, one baby’s experience on life is not going to be the same with the others. It is like the streams finding its own path, as they journey down the mountain. But at the end of it, we will all still meet at the bottom, where we flow into the afterlife.

I was recently re-connected with a friend on Facebook. He was one of the coolest guy that I got the chance to meet during my army days. It was probably barely just past 10 years, and I was really surprised at where life has brought him to. After a great career, he is now taking a sabbatical from the corporate world and exploring different opportunities. He is invested in a few properties, and is also onto a couple of business projects.

Unlike him, I never had the chance or was not exposed or aware of the job that he undertook, which took him from the initial point to where he is now. I was on a totally different stream. I did have my fair share of success in my own career but relative to his, I was no where near what he was earning.

The interesting thing is this – he was just like any of us, a normal guy from a decent family, not born with a silver spoon. He just worked his way up, and fought to get to where he is now. He told me that in his previous job, it is just happened that he was into what he was doing, and actually got a knack for doing what he was initially given as a job.

That’s the beauty of life. I am so inspired by him. What this experience taught me was the fact that everyone has their own streams in life to go on. We will not know where the stream will lead us to, what opportunities is going to bring us to, but the only thing we can do is to enjoy the experience (the now), and make the most out of it.

We may not experience the similar financial breakthroughs as some would experience. We may not even be as “lucky” as some. But this is the unique stream that you are on. Maybe it is just not your time yet to be there. Instead of being bitter and telling yourself that you are not as good, it is definitely more awesome to soak in the stream, reflect on where you at now, before making a list of where you would like to be/achieve, and then getting back on the stream and making your way to where you want to go, as per your list.

I am going back onto my stream now. Maybe we will meet somewhere down the “mountain.”

In the meantime, wishing us all the success and fun in our own individual streams.

2013 – Our New “Beginning”

2012 is officially over. Some of us may bemoan the end of a great year and wish that 2013 will be equally great. Others may be rejoicing about the fact that one of their craziest year is over.

Reegardless whether you had a great or a lousy year, the fact is that the new year is upon us! 2013 will be a year of new beginnings. A “new” canvas for you to paint new on, and to create something beautiful once again.

Like what they always say – “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This is a new year and in order to ensure that you have an even greater year to 2012, I personally believe that we have to pen down our goals, at least for 2013 – things that you want to achieve, etc.

Personally, I am still working towards financial freedom (which is why I have created this blog) and other personal goals (e.g. health and emotional success). 2013 will be a great year for me. I am looking forward to more opportunities and doors. I am looking forward to building more meaningful relationships. The first thing I can do for myself in 2013 is to embrace it with unbounded positivism.

Year in Review (2012)
To be honest, 2012, for me, was not great. This allows for 2013 to be awesome. Many things happened, probably attributed to mid-life crisis. There will be a period in our lives where we will experience great depression and also huge obstacles. I believe 2011-2012 was the period for me. I am not saying that the “depression” is over. I like to take it as 2013 being a NEW year for me, with the possibility of giving me a new lease of life.

Financially, 2012 is still not that bad. Managed to clear a few debts and also started to save seriously (towards the end of 2012). A late start is still better than no start. *chuckles* Not that I am overly proud of my saving accomplishments but we all have to start somewhere right?

Emotionally, 2012 is still a wreak. Looking back, I am surprised that I even made it through the year. I have friends and family members to thank for. I was in a new career and industry, working and learning hard while going through some personal issues. It was tough, and I know that everyone has their stories. No one says that life is going to be easy, right? We can only dig deep and move forward. That which does not kill us will only make us stronger.

Goals for 2013
The fact that I got into 2013 means that I am destined to live through another year. It is totally up to me how I want 2013 to unfold. There will be stuff we cannot control, events that we cannot foresee, or even mistakes that are unavoidable. However, these are some of the goals I want to achieve in 2013.

  • Exercise more regularly (Judo, swimming & weights)
  • Control my intake of coffee (I am currently drinking like 5-6 cups a day!)
  • Having a stash of SGD10,000 by June 2013, and SGD15,000 by end of 2013 (I will get into the how in my subsequent blog posts)
  • Consistently learning and practicing on my FX trading
  • Maintain this blog (to keep track of my progress, mainly financials), so as to keep my focused
  • Take a month break off work and stay in another country during that period
  • Learn Thai (Writing and Reading)
  • Finding business opportunities to embark on
  • Others that will be added to the list as the year move on…

Looking my list, it appears to be daunting. So many things to be kept in the mind (which is the whole point) and so many things to do. Only time will unveil my progress.

Wishing each and everyone of you a Happy New Year! May 2013 bring new joy and opportunities for you. May you move closer to your dreams and may this New Year be a great blessing to your lives in many ways!

Humbly,
Damian
